Home Secretary: 'Scrap Human Rights Act'
The Home Secretary has backed calls for the Human Rights Act to be scrapped because she claims it hinders the Government's attempts to deport some foreign suspects.
Theresa May said she would "personally" like to see it abolished because it has caused problems at the Home Office.
Her comments, on the eve of the Conservative Party conference in Manchester , are likely to go down well with many Tories infuriated by its use by foreign criminals to avoid deportation.
But the remarks could anger Liberal Democrat cabinet colleagues, including Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Energy Secretary Chris Huhne, who have pledged to keep the Act.
Prime Minister David Cameron has supported suggestions that it be replaced with a British bill of rights.
He told the BBC's Andrew Marr programme: "I do agree that it would be good to replace the Human Rights Act with the British bill of rights.
"In coalition, we have agreed to look at the Human Rights Act. Obviously that will go slower than Theresa (May) or I would like."
